In Indian mythology, the story of Scorpio is associated with the tale of the great sage Kashyapa and his wife Kadru. Kadru, the mother of serpents, had a rivalry with her sister Vinata. In a bet, Kadru challenged Vinata to correctly identify the color of the tail of the divine horse Uchchaihshravas. Kadru cheated by asking her serpent sons to coil around the horse’s tail, making it appear black. As a result, Vinata lost the bet and became Kadru’s servant.
Feeling humiliated, Vinata’s son, the mighty bird deity Garuda, vowed to free his mother from servitude. To do so, he needed to obtain the divine nectar of immortality, Amrita. Garuda approached the gods to ask for their help in obtaining the nectar. The gods agreed to give him the Amrita if he could bring them the elixir without drinking it himself.
Garuda successfully retrieved the Amrita, but as he was flying back to the gods, he was intercepted by the devious serpents, including Kadru’s sons. They demanded that Garuda give them the nectar before he could deliver it to the gods. Garuda, being honorable, agreed to their demand but tricked them by placing the Amrita on a bed of kusha grass. The serpents, eager to consume the nectar, slithered over the grass, causing their bodies to be sliced by the sharp blades.
One of Kadru’s sons, the serpent king Vasuki, managed to escape with a small amount of the Amrita. This event led to the creation of the zodiac sign Scorpio, symbolizing the eternal struggle between light and darkness, good and evil. The story of Scorpio in Indian mythology serves as a reminder of the consequences of deceit and the importance of honor and integrity.
