In Hindu mythology, Sagittarius is associated with the constellation known as “Dhanu” or “Dhanus,” which translates to “bow” or “arc” in Sanskrit.

Representation of the Bow of Lord Shiva: In Hindu mythology, the bow is often associated with Lord Shiva, one of the principal deities. The bow symbolizes strength, power, and the ability to conquer obstacles. Sagittarius, with its glyph of an arrow or bow, can be seen as an embodiment of this divine weapon.

Dhanvantri is the divine physician and one of the avatars (incarnations) of Lord Vishnu. He emerged during the churning of the cosmic ocean (Samudra Manthan) with a pot of Amrit (nectar of immortality). The constellation of Dhanu (Sagittarius) is said to be connected with Dhanvantri’s manifestation, emphasizing healing and health.  In Hindu mythology, the archer is often a symbol of precision and focus. Sagittarius, represented by a centaur archer, could be associated with divine beings or heroes known for their archery skills, such as Lord Rama or Arjuna (from the epic Mahabharata).

In Vedic astrology (Jyotish), Sagittarius is considered a mutable fire sign ruled by Jupiter (Brihaspati). Jupiter is known as Guru in Hindu mythology, representing wisdom, knowledge, and spiritual guidance. People born under Sagittarius in Vedic astrology are believed to inherit qualities of optimism, enthusiasm, and a quest for higher knowledge and truth. Certain Hindu festivals and rituals are also associated with the celestial movements of Sagittarius. For instance, the transition of the Sun into Sagittarius marks the beginning of the Dhanurmasa period, a significant time for spiritual practices and devotion in Hindu culture.

Sagittarius is the ninth sign of the zodiac, and individuals born under this sign (between November 22 and December 21) are known for their adventurous spirit, optimism, and love for exploration. Sagittarius is symbolized by the Archer, often depicted as a centaur (half-human, half-horse) aiming an arrow upward. This symbolizes the Sagittarian quest for truth, wisdom, and higher knowledge.Sagittarius belongs to the Fire signs, along with Aries and Leo. Fire signs are passionate, dynamic, and enthusiastic. Sagittarius is one of the Mutable signs, indicating flexibility, adaptability, and a preference for variety and change. Jupiter is the ruling planet of Sagittarius.
